The merchant of venice Questions (part 1)

Act 1 scene 1

Question One: 

Antonio is depressed without knowing why. What two possible reasons do his friends suggest? 
His boats not returning and he might be in love.

Question Two: 

Do you think Graziano's contributions help Antonio's mood? 
No

Question Three: 

What are your first impressions of Bassanio? 
A broke fella biting off more than he can chew.

Question Four: 

Is he in love? 
Yes as you can clearly tell by how he describes her.

Question Five: 

Why does he need to borrow money again now? 
So he can impress Portia.

How do Portia's first words compare with Antonio’s?
They are both tired of this world.

What is the reason for her mood? 
All of Portia's suiters are not up to her standards.

Yes because she is helping Portia decide who she likes the most.

Act 1 scene 3

Question One: 
Shylock is a moneylender. Does he seem eager to do business with Bassanio? How do you know? 
No, Because Shylock thinks that Bassanio can't pay him back.

Question Two: Which does Shylock think is safe, his business or Antonio’s? why? 
Shylock thinks his business is safer because Shylock has his money in his hands as Antonio has his money on his ships.

Question Three: 
Why doesn’t Shylock want to dine with Bassanio and Antonio? 
Because of their religion.

Question Four: 
What strict principal of his is Antonio breaking to help Bassanio? 
Lending and borrowing money.

Question five: 
Shylock tells a bible story to prove that the taking of profit is blessed, as long as thieving is not involved. Does he convince Antonio? Give evidence. 
No, because after Shylock's story Antonio asks if this story was inserted to make interest good.

Question six: 
Shylock accuses Antonio of a whole catalog of nastiness. How does Antonio answer the charges? He says to lend him money not of friendship but rather lend it to me as an enemy so If he doesn't pay up Shylock can do whatever he wants to Antonio.

How does Bassanio react to the proposed bond? 
He says to Antonio I would rather dwell in my necessity don't seal such a bond for me.

Question One: 
We have watched racial and religious tensions at work in A1S3. The Prince of Morocco opens A2S1 with another sensitive issue. What is it?
The issue is that Morocco's skin is dark. Quote: Mislike me not for my complexion, The shadow'd livery of the burnished sun.


Question Two: 

If Antonio loses his gamble, Pe must forfeit a pound of flesh. What must Portia’s suitors give up if they fail to win her?
They must not marry another woman. Quote: You must take your chance; And either not attempt to choose at all, Or swear before you choose, if you choose wrong, Never speak to lady afterward.

Shylock practices ‘usury’. What is this?
The action or practice of lending money at unreasonably high rates of interest.

Why do Shylock and Antonio hate each other?
They hate each other because of their religion.

Act Two Discussion Questions:

In A2S2,
Launcelot deceives his father. In A2S6, Jessica deceives hers, What does each of them hope to achieve?
Revenge and Freedom.

In A2S5 Lines 11-18 & 28-39.
In both speeches, Shylock is speaking to his daughter, Jessica. What is his attitude to her? Give supporting examples from the text.
He is Overprotective.

In A2S5 Lines 11-18 & 28-39.
What do Launcelot and the audience know, that Shylock does not? How does this show dramatic irony?
That Jessica is planning on eloping. The dramatic irony is that while Shylock is concerned with his valuable possessions, it is his daughter that he is going to lose, and it’s her That has all of his possessiongs.

Act Two Scene Seven

Question one:
Which casket does the Prince of Morocco think is worthy to contain Portia’s portrait. Use evidence of the text to justify your answer.
The gold one. Quote “One of these three contains her heavenly picture. Is ’t like that lead contains her? 'Twere damnation To think so base a thought. It were too gross To rib her cerecloth in the obscure grave. Or shall I think in silver she’s immured, Being ten times undervalued to tried gold? O sinful thought!” Meaning that thinking that the lead and silver caskets were worthy of having Portia’s portrait in them was a really bad thing.

Question two:
How is Portia feeling in A2S7 at the beginning, while the Prince is making his choice, at the end.
At the beginning she’s nervous, while he’s making his choice, she’s frustrated with the process. In the end, she’s relieved.

Question three:
What was Portia's father trying to achieve by the use of the caskets. Does this seem to be working?
To see who is worthy of Portia. It’s not really working, because Portia doesn’t like any of them...

Act Two, Scene Eight

Question one:
What double disaster has struck Shylock?
That his daughter ran away with a Christian. And took some of his money with her.

Question two:
Where did Shylock think Lorenzo & Jessica might be? On Bassanio’s ship.
Quote: The villain Jew with outcries raised the Duke, Who went with him to search Bassanio’s ship.

Question three:
How did Bassanio and Antonio part?
They parted with a short conversation and a handshake.

Question four:
What is the first suggestion of trouble for Antonio? Find a quote that tells you this.
Quote: I spoke with a Frenchman yesterday who said that a Venetian ship loaded with treasure was wrecked in the English Channel. I thought about Antonio when he told me. I silently hoped it wasn’t his ship.

Act Two, Scene Nine

Question one:
What is the purpose of the rhymes in the caskets?
To mock the suitors choice.

Question two:
Why does the Prince of Aragon discard the golden caskets? What does his interpretation of the inscription tell us about his character?
He thinks that others will think Portia's portrait will be in the gold casket. He's not going to what everybody else would do.

Question three:
What is Portia’s reaction to Bassanio’s arrival?
She does not know for sure that it is Bassanio. But she is curious.

Act Three, Scene One

Question One:

Why does Shylock assume Solanio and Salerio know of Jessica’s flight?
Because he knows that Solanio and Salerio are friends with Lorenzo. So he thinks they would know where Lorenzo and Jessica are.

Question Two:

What is the second suggestion of misfortune for Antonio- find a quote. Word is going around that one of Antonio's ships have sunk.
Quote: That there is a rumor another one of his boats sunk because it went past a place that's known for having a lot of shipwrecks. "Why, yet it lives there unchecked that Antonio hath a ship of rich lading wrecked on the narrow seas. The Goodwins I think they call the place—a very dangerous flat, and fatal, where the carcasses of many a tall ship lie buried"

Question Three:

Who has been looking for Lorenzo and Jessica, how do we know?
Tubal has been getting information about Jessica's whereabouts. We can tell by the way he tells Shylock information about Jessica. 

Question four:

Where do Shylock and Tubal arrange to meet and with what purpose?
They plan to meet at the synagogue, to do Jewish prayer or to make bargains.

Act Three, Scene Two

Question One:
Why does Portia want Bassanio to delay his choice? Because Portia does not want to lose Bassanio's company.

Question Two:
What makes Bassanio choose lead over the silver and gold caskets?, find the quotes in the text to support your thinking.
Because the "beauty" of gold can be deceiving and silver is too common. Lead is humble.

Question Three:
What does Portia’s speech A3S2 L166-174 reveal about the expected roles of a woman in marriage? She needs to be dependant on her husband and is basically only an object or maid to him

Question Four:
What did Gratiano’s and Nerissa’s wish to marry depend on?
Portia's permission. 

Question Five:
How does Portia know that the letter contains bad news?
When Bassanio opened the letter his face paled, which usually happens when something bad has happened.

Question Six:
What help does Portia offer straightaway?
2 or even 4 times the amount of ducats Antonio owed Shylock

Question Seven:
Why do we not expect this help to be successful?
Because it was past the due date and the court will most definitely be strict

Question eight:
Do you think Portia would still be in love with Bassanio if she knew he had lied about his wealth?
Yes, because Portia was in love with him before they even met properly.

The heart and the bottle

In this story, there is a little girl. Whos curiosity was boundless. She imagined things that even she knew was impossible. She thought of things that others wouldn't. She loved finding new things. and everything she did was with her grandad. But one day her grandad disappeared. In order to withstand the sorrow, she put her heart in a bottle. as she grew up the heart kept getting heavier and heavier. After a while, she thought it was finally time to let her heart out of the bottle. But she had forgotten how to. She might have never found out until she met a young girl. The young girl brings back the memories that she had forgotten.
